Link popularity a third major element search engines use to determine where your search ranking should be placed. Today, it is not enough to solely rely on the philosophy, “if you build it they will come.” Instead, a web site that has been built with good content and a good navigation system needs to become active. The site needs to have incoming links to help boost its popularity in the eyes of the search engines. Incoming links do several key things. They help to separate between the popular and unpopular sites, they add creditability, and they help search engines further categorize the web site. In addition, link popularity should help to increase the web traffic coming to your site because you are adding additional ways visitors can find your site.
Simply put, link popularity is defined as the number of websites or web pages pointing to a site. These are called incoming links and search engines use a web site’s link popularity in their search algorithms. This is evident when comparing two sites with similar content and navigation menus. The site with the greater link popularity will likely get ranked above the other site because the search engines assume the site with high link popularity is more important.
